Somewhere along the way, we decided that summer was the season for vacations.
We save our PTO. We wait for school breaks. We squeeze ourselves onto crowded beaches in July because that’s just what people do.
Meanwhile, January quietly sits there, offering one of the best opportunities to travel all year.
I’m not talking about taking a quick weekend trip because you’re tired of the cold. I’m talking about intentionally starting your year somewhere that makes you feel like yourself again.
After the holidays, most people jump right back into life. The decorations come down. The calendars fill up. Work picks back up. The weather turns gray. Before you know it, you’re counting the days until Memorial Day.
What if you didn’t?
What if, instead of pushing through another winter, you had something waiting for you?
Not just a vacation.
Something to look forward to.
January feels different.
There’s something about traveling after everyone else has gone home.
The holiday crowds have disappeared. Resorts feel calmer. Breakfast doesn’t feel rushed. You aren’t competing with everyone else for the best chair by the pool.
The pace changes.
And honestly, that’s what so many people are actually looking for.
Not a packed itinerary.
Not a vacation where you need another vacation afterward.
Just space to slow down.
Winter doesn’t have to feel like winter.
One of my favorite things about planning January and February travel is helping people completely change the scenery.
One week you’re wearing a coat to the grocery store.
The next you’re eating breakfast outside, listening to the ocean, or watching monkeys swing through the trees while you drink your coffee.
Maybe that’s an overwater villa in the Maldives.
Maybe it’s a private villa tucked into the jungle in Bali.
Maybe it’s waking up to birds instead of alarm clocks in Costa Rica.
Different destinations. Same feeling.
You remember what it feels like to breathe a little deeper.
Waiting usually costs more than planning.
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that January is too far away to think about.
It isn’t.
The best flights, the room categories everyone actually wants, and the resorts people save on Pinterest all year don’t stay available forever.
Planning early doesn’t always mean spending more.
More often, it means having better choices.
And I’d rather help someone choose between three incredible rooms than settle for the only one that’s left.
Maybe summer isn’t your season.
Don’t get me wrong. Summer vacations have their place.
But if you’ve never taken a trip in January or February, you might be surprised by how much you enjoy it.
There’s something satisfying about everyone asking how you’re surviving winter while you’re deciding whether to spend the afternoon by the pool or at the spa.
It’s a different kind of luxury.
Not because it’s extravagant.
Because it comes exactly when you need it.
If you’ve been thinking about escaping winter, this is your sign to stop thinking about it and start planning it.
Your January self will be glad you did.
