My Very Unpopular Food Opinion (and My Top 5 Food Cities in the U.S. That Never Miss)

Let’s Talk Food: The Cities That Always Get It Right (And One That Really Doesn’t)

There’s something about food that sparks the realest travel debates.

This morning, I was chatting with a fellow travel advisor about something that comes up all the time when planning trips for clients, restaurant recommendations. And specifically, U.S. food cities. The ones we love. The ones people love. And… the ones that maybe get a little too much hype.

So, let me start with a very unpopular opinion.

I was underwhelmed by the food in New Orleans.

Now, before y’all come for me, hear me out. I know people rave about it. And I didn’t hate it! I just didn’t have the “mind blown, this changed my life” kind of meals that I expected. Was the food bad? No. Was it the best I’ve had? Also no. And that’s okay. Not every city can be a heavy hitter in my personal food world.

But let’s talk about the ones that are. Because these cities? They never miss.

My Top 5 U.S. Food Cities

(Based on flavor, consistency, and that I’ll-hop-on-a-plane-just-to-eat-there kind of vibe.)

1. New York & Chicago (Tied for #1)

My #1 title goes back and forth depending on my mood, but you just can’t touch the range these cities offer. Whether it’s the corner deli or a coveted reservation, both are in a league of their own.

I’m still mourning the loss of Gigino’s Wagner Park—it was that girl. RIP to one of my faves.

2. Charleston & Savannah (Tied again, because choosing one is impossible)

Charleston is giving modern Southern charm with plates that make you feel something.

Savannah? Baby, she’s soulful and laid-back but knows how to throw down.

Some faves:

– The Collins Quarter (yes please, to brunch)

– Savannah Seafood Shack (if you know, you know)

– Treylor Park (quirky and delicious)

– Vic’s on the River (yes, it’s touristy. But it delivers)

3. Las Vegas

Sin City knows how to eat. Whether you’re balling out with Michelin-star menus or hopping around food halls, Vegas is where high-end dining and late-night guilty pleasures meet. Every trip I take there reminds me why it earned a spot in my Top 5.

Honorable Mentions:

Houston – I haven’t been enough times to give it a permanent spot on the list, but every bite I’ve had there made me want to come back. Just wait, I’ll be back with a fork and an agenda.
San Francisco – From the freshest seafood to flavor-packed global cuisine, this city holds its own. Definitely a contender for a future reshuffle.

Let me be clear: good food is subjective. People will always say, “Oh, you just didn’t go to the right place,” or “Next time try this spot.” And maybe they’re right. But when a city consistently delivers on experience, vibe, taste, and creativity. It earns a spot on my list.

And for me, these five cities don’t just serve food. They serve flavor moments that live rent-free in my memory.

If you’re planning a trip and food is high on your priority list, let’s make sure you land in a city that gets it right.

Because life’s too short for bland bites and basic menus.
