TRAVEL TIPS

Cruise Ship Travel

Visiting cruise ships dock at the Stazione Marittima where facilities include a tourist information office, shops, and cafés. Buses 152, SEPSA, and CTP run to the train station, Piazza Garibaldi, along with tram routes 1 to 4. By the Circumvesuviana line from Piazza Garibaldi, you can reach Pompeii, Ercolano (Herculanium), and Castellammare (for the funicular to Mt. Vesuvius). There are at least three hourly trains, and fares begin at €2.90 to Pompeii (one-way, 40 minutes); a single ticket within Naples is €1, a day-pass is €4.50.

The EAVBUS route also links central Naples with Vesuvius and Pompeii with Vesuvius. Departing from Piazza Piedigrotta in Naples at 9 am or 10:15. A one-day ticket costs about €13.

Ferries to Capri depart from the same port where cruise ships disembark; fast ferries leave from the Clata Porta di Massa, and hydrofoils leave from Molo Beverello. Hydrofoils (which are more frequent) make the trip in 40 minutes, other ferries 50 minutes. You can just walk on the ferry after buying a ticket. Fast-ferry prices are €17.80, and hydrofoils are €18.80–€20.20. Once on the island, the funicular railway from the port up to Capri Town is €1.40 round-trip.

Taxis charge approximately €3.50 initially (more on Sunday and holidays), then €0.05 per 65 meters or 10 seconds of idling. A car rental could be useful if you want to explore the Amalfi Coast, but it is imperative that you return to Naples with time to spare, because traffic along the coast can be very heavy and slow-moving.

Best Bets for Cruise Passengers

Capri. Many ferries serve the island; you can luxuriate in Capri town's "Piazzetta" or walk the many trails of this enchanting island.

Ischia. A brief ferry rides beyond Procida drops you in Ischia Porto, its gelaterie, bars, and restaurants all providing most pleasant views.

Positano. Almost too picturesque for its own good, this vertically oriented village is the gem of the Amalfi Coast.

Pozzuoli. The fish are as fresh as ever in Pozzuoli's many restaurants, and for beauty its gulf more than holds its own with that of Naples to the east.

Procida. People who have seen the film Il Postino will know this place already; the top sight here is the Marina di Carricella harbor front.
